5 Distrustful Nutrition Facts That Can Affect Our Health

1.    All Natural

The food industry is becoming more and more clever when it comes to labeling various products, and by far the most deceiving denomination is the “all natural” one. When you’re walking around the supermarket and doing your groceries, you are instantly drawn in by this clever marketing ploy and mistakenly believe that you are getting something healthy.

But the reality couldn’t be more different. The infamous American Food and Drug Administration, or FDA for short, defines this term very loosely. Basically, if what a company is selling doesn’t contain any synthetic substances, colors or flavors, then it’s good to go. And while this is still something beneficial, it doesn’t mean that what you’re getting is truly natural in any way.

Plenty of products have added high fructose corn syrup and are still passable to be part of this category because that particular ingredient comes from corn. Thus, in spite of the existence of studies which demonstrate its links to obesity and poor health, foods that contain it might still be marketed as good for you.

And the list doesn’t end here. Raw chicken, for example, is usually injected with sodium to prolong its shelf life, which is extremely detrimental to our well-being, even though the substance itself is not synthetic. Therefore, next time you see this tag on the shelves, question everything. It might be true, but then again it might just be a sly trick.

2.    Zero Trans Fat

Nowadays, the fact that trans fat clogs arteries and raises cholesterol levels is not a secret anymore. In fact, the discovery of this fact is what gave birth to the entire “good fats versus bad fats” discussion which taught us that there are some healthy ones out there too. For this reason, foods that claim not to contain it are incredibly popular. Still, you need to be cautious.

According to Forbes Magazine, the FDA allows companies to market their products with the “zero trans fat” label as long as there is actually less than half a gram of it per serving. Therefore, if you were planning to buy something with this label thrown on thinking that it would be good for you, think again. That might not be the case.

Hydrogenated soybean oil is something to look out for when reading the label. While it might not sound bad, it is actually a trans fat in disguise that plenty of manufacturers use. Furthermore, they also tend to replace it with palm or coconut oil, which is equally unhealthy.

3.    Fat-Free

But what about foods which are marketed as being entirely “fat-free”? With the discussion on fats, in general, being so complex and confusing, many companies are taking this route in the hopes of drawing in customers. But while such products might indeed be free of any type of fats, this doesn’t mean that they also have a low-calorie count or are good for you in any way.

When a product is fat-free, its taste is also lost somewhere along the way. For this reason, manufacturers need to make up for it by adding sugar, salt, flour, and thickeners. This doesn’t only turn the food into a calorie bomb, but it can also lead to overeating due to a feeling less satiated by it.

4.    Real Fruit

Plenty of candy and desert-type products on the market have the line “made with real fruit” slapped somewhere on the packaging. This leads many consumers to mistakenly believe that they are guilt-free, while in reality, they’re most likely damaging their health with each bag of gummies they munch on. But why does this happen?

Yet again, FDS regulations in this respect are lax, to say the least of it. While it is true that the product must indeed contain real fruit under some form so that it qualifies for the label and for the company to not be liable in front of the law, there isn’t a mandatory percentage or amount specified anywhere.

Therefore, as little as one drop of juice or a single blueberry is more than enough to get the green light to use this marketing technique. Needless to say, the prospects of this are rather concerning. So, the next time you think you’re being health-conscious while eating your favorite candy, think again.

5.    Light

Last, but certainly not least, the use of the label “light” on foods such as olive oil or juice is also a misleading technique that refers to something else then it should. While the average customer would expect this to mean that a product has less fat, it might refer to its flavor without actually clarifying this. Therefore, reading the pieces of information on the back is crucial.

In order for a food to qualify as “light” from a nutritional standpoint, it needs to have at least half of the fat contents of the original product, if not less. If that’s not the case, then the label most likely refers to the taste of the product being less intense than or not as spicy as that of the regular variant.

If you want to stay healthy, you also have to stay informed. Thus, the next time you are out grocery shopping, be wary of these five labels. They might not be what they seem, and it’s important to spot that early on.
